Abang Island is a small island located in the southern city of Batam, Riau Islands province. The island, measuring approximately 2000 x 5000 m, and is approximately 65 kilometers from main island of Batam. Abang Island can be addressed by using a boat, or known locally as pompong from 6th Barelang Bridge, around 20 minutes. Precisely at this coordinates 0 ° 33’54 “N, 104 ° 11’35” East. For GPS user, Abang Island is located at latitude: 0.58 and longitude: 104.22.
Abang Island as tourism destination
Abang Island is tourism destination developed by Batam City Government and already be one of the tourist attraction program.
In addition to its beautiful beaches, potential tourism in Abang Island is its underwater like coral reefs and other underwater natural beauty. Like blue coral reef which are endangered and rare in the world.
With coral reefs and many kinds of colorful fish are considered equivalent to Bunaken beach, Abang Island is often referred to as the “Bunaken” in western Indonesia.
Territorial sea around Abang Island and Petong Island were visited by many fishing enthusiasts. Species of fish obtained include trivially fish, lencing, red snapper, nut, pufferfish, and others.
Abang Island sea has nine points (spot) which is ideal to be a diving and snorkeling place with a depth of 15-18 meter. To be able to enjoy the underwater beauty of the area, before visitors need to know the weather conditions due to weather changes in the area are frequently.
The best weather conditions for diving at Abang Island are around March to August, when the east wind season, and September to November, when the west wind season. At that time, somewhat hostile weather conditions and currents under the sea is not too tight so it is very convenient for diving.
To reach the Abang Island can only be done through port at Galang Baru Island by hiring a boat or speed boat owned by fishermen and the distance of about 40-50 minutes. Boat rental rates depend on the current negotiations. Currently the government is arranging all Batam cultural infrastructures of coral reefs in Abang Island as one of the goals of coral reefs in the Riau Islands to pick up tourists.
